Opportunities
We are looking for students, writers and travelers who have literary enthusiasm and ability... Work for us as an intern by focusing on a particular writer whose work has been published in English and which could be featured as a tour in any country in the world. Suitable articles will be featured on the site and may form the basis for a special interest tour. There may be some travel opportunities for suitable candidates. We are also interested in hearing from literary travelers with stories from their own journeys, where to go, what to do and hints and tips for literary travelers.

Introduction

Jane Austen loved a good walk, and a good view. She seemed happiest in a small scale rural English environment, although she did spend time in London and of course Bath. These do not seem to have been the happiest times in her life judging by her ability to write while in these places, and her comments about them.

She spent much of her most personal life in quite small homes, almost cottages, but she also visited often the great houses of the areas in which she resided and she appreciated the balance and beauty of Georgian architecture. She was wonderfully observant of the ways of life of those around her. Churches must have been a large part of her life, because of her fathers occupation.

In this tour, we attempt to bring to the participant a sense of what life was like for Jane Austen, by visiting places she would have seen, or places like those that she would have seen. We include some walks, as she not only enjoyed these, but on occasion needed to walk to get to places she wanted to visit. Walking would have been an important experience for her. There are enjoyable options for those who do not want to walk. We include visits to houses and churches.

Touring the life and times of Jane Austen

Depart USA at least one day before the start date for the tour - overnight in the plane

Day One: First day of the tour
Travel2Books will advise the meeting point for the tour. September Arrive London airport (or arrive from Pre tour location) - transfer to tour hotel. Meet guide who will lead a tour of the British Library and The Victoria and Albert museum and later visit a specialist book shop featuring books from Jane Austens era.. Dinner in hotel
Overnight London

Day Two: Introduction to the tour; Touring in London
September Introductory seminar with speaker who is a specialist in Jane Austen Morning sightseeing tour of London places associated with Jane Austen. We know that she walked in Kensington Gardens and that she visited her brother at different locations in London. We will also visit the Sir John Soane Museum, a perfect Georgian house (built 1812 to 1813), to understand better the age of which Jane Austen was a part. Optional Theater visit. Overnight London

Day Three: A day of exploration of sites associated with Jane Austen
September Depart London for Steventon, the village where Jane Austin grew up. The rectory no longer exists but you can visit the church which has many links to the Austin Family. On our way here we will offer the option of walking up Box Hill with the guide as they did in the novel Emma.. Those who do not wish to do this will visit the local area by coach Dinner in Winchester Evening visit to Winchester Cathedral Overnight Winchester

Day Four: Following in Jane Austens footsteps, to day
September - To day visit Chawton where Jane Austen lived after her fathers death. This was Jane Austens home where she wrote Mansfield Park, Emma and Persuasion. Left much as it was in her time, the house and garden are attractive and its easily possible to imagine her sitting working and hiding her work from people who came to visit her and her family at the house. - a gentle peaceful place. Going further up the lane visit the big house at Chawton where Janes brother Edward Knight lived. Later visit Selbourne and Gilbert Whites house there (He wrote The Natural History of Selbourne). Although not known to Jane Austen, their lives overlapped by some 20 years, and visiting his house and garden and the church and village give a good sense of Hampshire as it must have been in the 18th century. Take a gentle walk in this location for those who wish.
Overnight Winchester

Day Five: Tour Winchester and Janes final resting place Visit gardens in the area.
September - A full day exploring the city of Winchester and the surrounding area including the cathedral, the final resting place of Jane Austin. Winchester has a well conserved medieval core and a classic English cathedral. We will also take time to visit some gardens in the area - Montisfont Abbey, a beautiful peaceful place and Sir Harold Hillier Gardens. Some of Janes letters show her detailed interest in gardens, as in the garden at Chawton.
Overnight Winchester

Day Six: A delightful day seeing Bath.
September - Full day to visit Bath, visit the Jane Austin center and the Roman Baths and Pump Room of the beautiful Georgian City of Bath with its famed terraces, lovely antique shops and many restaurants. Much of the historic center of Bath is as it was in Jane Austens time and it is easy to imagine her and her family out walking in the streets, where horse carriages would have taken the place of the ubiquitous motor car of our day.
Overnight Winchester

Day Seven:
September - Depart Winchester. To day we will take a walk in the Hampshire countryside and visit Breamore village church and Elizabethan Manor house, with its interesting collection of paintings and furniture, home of the Hulse family since just before Jane Austens time. We walk to appreciate the way that Jane Austen so often chose for local visits and events. Those who do not wish to walk will explore the local area by coach. Travel to Salisbury and visit its cathedral and close. Return to London.
